  • A limited obstetrical ultrasound can 1) date the pregnancy, 2) confirm that the pregnancy is in the uterus (not ectopic), 3) confirm that it is a viable pregnancy (that you aren’t miscarrying). This is important because approximately 10-20% of pregnancies actually end on their own in the first 12 weeks.**

  • Medical grade urine pregnancy tests can give a positive result as early as one day after a missed period, and in some cases before. However, first morning urine specimens are more accurate at detecting hCG, especially in early pregnancy. Urine pregnancy tests look for hCG as an indicator of pregnancy.

  • The most accurate way to date a pregnancy is through a limited obstetrical ultrasound. Many clients find out that they are at a very different point in their pregnancy than they thought. The date of your LMP (last menstrual period) should not be relied on to determine gestational age. Knowing more precisely how far along you are in your pregnancy is important because it affects your options.

  • Each appointment is unique because your situation is unique. Generally, you will start the appointment by filling out paperwork then completing a pregnancy test. If the test is positive, and if appropriate, you will be offered a sonogram (performed at our facility likely at the same visit). You will meet with medical staff to discuss the results of your sonogram. The staff of PSC will provide you with relevant information based on your situation and work to answer any questions that you have. We want you to feel informed, prepared and comfortable making a decision about the pregnancy.

  • During your appointment you will meet with our medical staff, usually an RN. If you are eligible for an ultrasound it will be performed by our sonographer, an RDMS (registered diagnostic medical sonographer). PSC’s medical services are performed under the supervision of a medical director who is an MD.

  • Yes. All of our services are confidential. No information about your situation will be shared with anyone unless you agree in writing.

  • You do not need to worry about having insurance. All services provided by PSC are offered at no cost. PSC is a 501c3 nonprofit funded through the generosity of community partners and grants. Many in our community believe that women deserve to have excellent care and options when making a choice about their pregnancy so they generously support and fund the work of PSC.

  • We know, pregnancy can be overwhelming. Deciding how to handle that pregnancy is a very big decision. It is important that you consider all your options and take time to consider what is best in your situation. PSC is here to provide you with access to medical professionals and accurate information to help you make an informed and empowered decision.
